Tri-Sport Event in Dundurn, SK

Soldier On, in collaboration with three Dundurn/Saskatoon sport delivery providers, will be hosting the Dundurn Tri-Sport Event in Dundurn and Saskatoon, SK. This will be a three-day event running from August 31 to September 2. This event will bring together both serving and retired ill/injured CAF members, allowing participants to connect through peer support and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle.

It is only open to registered Soldier On members residing in the Dundurn/Saskatoon geographical area. There is no cost and assistance is provided in registration and filling out the waiver if requested. Travel assistance is not provided for those living in the Dundurn/Saskatoon geographical area.

The event is broken down into three separate activities: equestrian, golf and archery. Applicants can apply for one, two or all three activities but must indicate their first, second and third choice.

Activity # 1 – Saskatoon Equine Experience 

Instruction and mentoring will be provided to six (6) Soldier On members by East Edge Equestrian located at Elevation Equestrian.

Assistance throughout the event will be provided courtesy of the staff from East Edge Equestrian where you will be introduced to basic horsemanship skills. They have the necessary adaptive equipment for those with mobility issues but have stated that the participant must be capable of conducting one-person assist transfers to the saddle from the platform.

Activity # 2 – Golfing at the Park 

Instruction and mentoring will be provided to eight (8) Soldier on members by a PGA certified golf instructor from the Holiday Park Golf Course.

Assistance throughout the event will be provided courtesy of the staff from Holiday Park Golf Course.

Activity # 3 – Archery 

Basic archery instruction and mentoring will be provided to eight (8) Soldier On members by Rémi Letourneau and members from the Dundurn Rod, Gun and Archery Club (RGA Club).

Assistance throughout the event will be provided courtesy of the members from the Dundurn RGA Club.

Participants
The number of Soldier On participants is limited to the following: 
  • Equestrian: six
  • Golf: eight
  • Archery: eight
Minimum eligibility criteria
Any serving member or veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from the Dundurn/Saskatoon, SK geographical area who acquired a permanent physical or mental health illness or injury while enrolled as a member of the CAF; whether attributable or not to service.

Serving Members
Medical clearance may be required by your chain of command.

Mental & Physical Requirements
  • Soldier On members participating in any of the three activities (equestrian, golf, and/or archery) must be able to tolerate six (6) hours of moderate paced activities.
  • Specific to equestrian, participants must weigh under 250 lbs (as per regulations from the Sport Provider for the horse’s safety) and be able to walk and maneuver in and around horses.
    • Any participant with unstable spinal injuries cannot ride the horses (they can come and participate but will not be getting aboard).
    • Riders must be able to mobilize, and anyone chair bound will need to be able to do a one person assist transfer to the saddle from the platform.
    • The SDP will also need to know ahead of time if any riders will require a leader or adaptive equipment, so that they can have it ready to go.
    • Participants will be required to bring their own safety helmet (riding, bicycle, and/or hockey).
  • Specific to golf, participants must be able to swing a golf club without issue or being in violation of their MELs.
  • Specific to archery, participants must be able to draw the string on a bow at shoulder height without issue or being in violation of their MELs.
    • Participants are advised that this event is be located at the Canadian Armed Forces Detachment Dundurn, and thus they may be exposed to a day-to-day military environment.
  • Due to the busy activity schedule, applicants must have a limited requirement for rest throughout the activity.
  • Participants will be joined with other ill/injured members and civilians, and therefore should be able to function in a social environment.

COVID-19
Soldier On events are planned in accordance with municipal, provincial, territorial and federal public health measures (PHM) and regulations as well as the Canadian Armed Forces health policy and guidelines. The health and safety of Soldier On participants and staff, PSP staff, and CAF TG personnel are paramount. While specific safety precautions for each event will depend on the scope, scale and location of the event, the utmost care will be undertaken to ensure the risk associated with the spread of COVID-19 is very low.

Specific precautions, rules, regulations and observances will be communicated to selected participants for this specific camp in due course, but all applicants must be prepared to:

  • Be familiar with, and adhere to current PHM regulations and guidance;
  • Complete the respective provincial / territorial or federal government COVID-19 self-assessment tool before attending the event;
  • Refrain from participating in a Soldier On event if they have tested positive for COVID-19, have come in contact with someone that has tested positive for COVID-19 and/or are experiencing symptoms of the virus;
  • Practice physical distancing during activity, including the use of non-medical mask when appropriate;
  • Follow all safety precautions provided by Soldier On and its sport service providers;
  • Adhere to a stringent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and perform rigorous hand hygiene;
  • Inform Soldier On immediately if you are not feeling well.

Soldier On, during the conduct of this activity, shall:

  • Ensure that the event is conducted following the current PHM regulations and guidelines of the location in question;
  • Ensure that all staff and participants are using PPE properly and following necessary protocols;
  • Soldier On will cease the event if participants do not respect any of the health and safety protocols that are in place;
  • Ensure PPE, hand sanitizer and disinfectant supplies are available and are being used;
  • Continue to monitor the further provincial lifting of or changes in restrictions which may affect their operations;
  • Track physical interactions (time/date/attendees/location) on physical activity log.

Confirmation details
The event OPI will confirm in writing with the participants selected for this activity. A joining instruction will be issued prior to event; ensuring applicants are authorized to participate IAW applicable policies & eligibility criteria.
